LANCASTER—The Aiken Gallery at the Allure Art Center, 419 Rappahannock Drive, White Stone, is now exhibiting new watercolor and acrylic paintings of regional scenes.
David Aiken has been working on several new series of paintings and is excited to share them, reported Jeff Cherry.
Aiken and his wife Zora, both artists, co-authored seven of children’s’ books, and he is the illustrator for many more, said Cherry.
For years, he gave school talks for young readers, the highlight of which was an unusual type of art demonstration. One by one, D. Aiken asked each child to make a scribble on a sketch pad. Each scribble became a starting point as he quickly turned each one into an instant drawing: maybe it became a bird, or a fish, a flower, a dragon.
In the process, he encouraged children to use their imagination, perhaps later to try their own hand with a friend’s scribble and encourage their own creative abilities, said Cherry.
Many of the Aikens’ books are available at the gallery, as well as an assortment of prints and ornaments which D. Aiken designed for holiday decor and gifts.
The gallery is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
