VA250 History Day to bring living history and interactive exhibits to HCC&M June 27

LANCASTER—Historic Christ Church & Museum (HCC&M), 420 Christ Church Road, Weems, will welcome visitors of all ages to VA250 History Day from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Saturday, June 27.

This free community event will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the nation’s independence with immersive exhibitions, living history, children’s activities, local history booths, food trucks and tours of one of Virginia’s most remarkable colonial landmarks.

The one-day event invites guests to step into Virginia’s Revolutionary-era story through a variety of hands-on experiences. Costumed interpreters, special exhibitions and family-friendly programs will bring history to life throughout the day.

“VA250 History Day is an opportunity for our community to come together and experience the people, stories, and ideas that shaped Virginia’s role in the American Revolution,” said event organizer Jill Sears. “We are excited to offer a day that is engaging, educational, and fun for visitors of all ages, with so many ways to connect with history right here at Historic Christ Church & Museum.”

The Virginia Museum of History & Culture exhibition Give Me Liberty: Virginia & The Forging of a Nation will be on display in the Bayne Center, allowing visitors to explore the stories, choices and conflicts that helped forge a nation. The exhibition examines ordinary and iconic Virginians, global forces and pivotal events between 1774 and 1776 that shaped American independence, including Patrick Henry’s famous speech and the impact of Lord Dunmore’s Proclamation.

Guests may climb aboard the expandable VA250 Mobile Museum Experience, Out of Many, One, a “museum on wheels” featuring interactive stories from across Virginia and beyond. The mobile museum commemorates the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and complements living history encounters with Revolutionary War interpreters.

Additional programs will include historical puppet shows at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., offering a family-friendly, 18th-century-style presentation about the Boston Tea Party. Visitors also can receive a VA250 passport stamp, passports will be available in the gift shop. They are urged to spend time in the research library viewing historical documents, maps and genealogy resources while speaking with historians and researchers.

Living history and demonstrations will add to the atmosphere. Representatives of the Royal Ethiopian Regiment, a Revolutionary War surgeon, the mounted 1st Light Dragoon, Leicester Heritage sheep and weaving exhibitors will participate.

Guests also can help complete a 25-foot mural tracing the timeline toward independence and enjoy children’s games, crafts, history booths, food trucks and free tours of Historic Christ Church & Museum, all included at no cost to the public.

Historic Christ Church was completed in 1735 and is a National Historic Landmark and one of America’s great buildings.
