NNSPS announces upcoming boating courses and seminars

LANCASTER—The Northern Neck Sail & Power Squadron (NNSPS) recently announced upcoming courses and free seminars.

All courses and seminars will be held at the NNSPS Classroom, 453C North Main Street, Kilmarnock, unless otherwise indicated, reported public relations coordinator K.C. Cavallaro. To register, call 339-7218, or email seo@abcnnk.org.

Courses will include:

• Boat Handling, April 8, 6-8 p.m., continuing on Wednesdays for seven weeks. This course is for newer recreational boaters who have completed the ABC course—or another basic boating class—and have received their Virginia Boater’s Certification Card. Participants will gain more knowledge, skill and confidence to boat safely in a variety of situations, said Cavallaro. Gain confidence in docking, handling a vessel underway, anchoring and other seamanship skills. The fee is $75 for members and $95 for others.

• Weather, April 14, 6-8 p.m., continuing on Tuesdays for eight weeks. Participants will learn the specifics of a forecast and how to anticipate related impact. Learn about meteorological systems, how weather is created and signs of impending poor or dangerous weather, he said. The also will learn how modern weather forecasts are produced and how to get them using computers, smart phones, radios and satellite communications. The fee is $75 for members and $95 for others.

• Boating Safety, May 9 and 16 and June 20 and 27, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The fee is $25 and will include use of a Boating Skills Virtual Trainer and a free Vessel Safety Check. “This is the most comprehensive in-person boating course available to give you the skills needed to enjoy your time on the water and boat with confidence,” said Cavallaro. Classes are presented in two consecutive sessions. Participants must attend both sessions to receive a card.

• Confidence in Docking & Undocking, April 11, 10 a.m. at Deltaville Yachting Center.

• Introduction to Navigation, April 11, 1 p.m.

• Emergencies on Board, April 19, 10 a.m.

• Man Overboard, April 19, 1 p.m.

• Introduction to Navigation, May 3, 10 a.m.

• All About VHF/DSC Marine Radio, May 3, 1 p.m.

• How to Use a Chart, May 17, 10 a.m.

• How To Use GPS/Chartplotters, May 17, 1 p.m.

• Intro to Marine Batteries, June 28, 10 a.m.

• Fuel and Boating, June 28, 1 p.m.
