NORTHUMBERLAND—The Reedville Fishermen’s Museum (RFM) will welcome the historic Chesapeake Bay skipjack Sigsbee June 17-18.  For those two days there will be two renowned skipjacks in town.

The Sigsbee will dock on Cockrell Creek at 902 Main Street, Reedville. The Sigsbee crew will offer free deck tours and educational programs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, June 18.

RFM, 504 Main Street, Reedville, will be open from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, in addition to the usual hours Thursdays through Saturdays and regular admission applies.

Visitors to the Sigsbee also are urged to visit RFM, home of the historic skipjack Claud W. Somers, built in 1911. A Somers volunteer crew member will be at the museum dock on Cockrell Creek both days to talk about the vessel, reported public relations volunteer Tina McCloud.

Sigsbee was built in 1901 and dredged oysters commercially for 88 years. After she was acquired by the Living Classrooms Foundation in 1990, a team of shipwrights and students rebuilt her. Today she sails as a living classroom, teaching students about the ecology, history and economic importance of the Chesapeake Bay.
