Deltaville Great Decisions talk to examine climate change

Dr. Andrew Kirkpatrick

Dr. Andrew Kirkpatrick will deliver his “International Climate Cooperation in an Era of Geopolitical Turmoil” talk as the next offering in the annual Deltaville Great Decisions lecture series. The talk is set for 10 a.m.-noon Friday, March 7, at the Deltaville Community Association (DCA) building at 17147 General Puller Highway in Deltaville.

It is free to attend the talk, but donations are encouraged to help pay for the coffee and cookies offered at the break.

The 2015 Paris Agreement established a UN-sponsored framework for negotiations on climate change and global warming. In subsequent Conference of the Parties (COP) meetings, experts and political leaders have come together seeking common cause of this growing global crisis.

What is the future of these efforts, and what has it yielded? What is the U.S. role in fostering cooperation on climate change? In a divided country, what is the range of possible futures for American policy leadership?

Andrew Kirkpatrick serves as chairman of the Department of Political Science at Christopher Newport University in Newport News. He was previously director of the university’s Environmental Studies program. He has a Ph.D. in political science from Emory University in Atlanta and specializes in international environmental politics. He lives in Newport News.

Session format: 40- to 50-minute presentation, coffee/cookie break, followed by question-and-answer period. Session concludes at noon.

To learn more about each topic the 2025 Great Decisions briefing book provides an article written by prominent experts on each topic and is available for purchase for $25 at the Deltaville and Urbanna branches of the Middlesex County Public Library system and at each Friday meeting. Note: the supply is limited. A desk copy is also available at each library branch.

The March 14 topic is “India: between China, the West and Global South.” This will be a Great Decisions video presentation and conclude the Great Decisions 2025 series.
