CANCELLED for 2025: York County to host Colonial Croaker Classic Fishing Tournament

YORK COUNTY—York County, in partnership with the Historic Triangle Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, will host the Colonial Croaker Classic Fishing Tournament, August 2–3, at Riverwalk Landing in Historic Yorktown.

This family-friendly event is open to anglers of all ages and experience levels, reported York County public affairs manager Kelli Tatum. Participants may launch from any boat ramp or fish from any shoreline or pier within the designated area, which includes the entire Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, extending downriver to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. There will be daily weigh-in, Sunday awards ceremony, raffles, trophies and food and drinks.

Lines are in the water each day no earlier than 6 a.m. and the weigh-in at the Freight Shed will be open from 2-5:30 p.m.The awards dinner will begin at 6 p.m. August 3 at the Freight Shed.

The Colonial Croaker Classic Fishing Tournament general fishing team entry for four is $200, includes four Ducks Unlimited memberships for the team and four tickets to the awards reception. The team can fish from boat, kayak, shore, or pier.

There will be a $500 purse for the fishing team catching the three biggest croaker/combined weight of all three fish.

There also will be optional calcuttas for additional chances to win money.

  • The Largest Croaker Calcutta entry is $100 per boat and pays 50/50 cash to the boat with the single heaviest croaker weighed.
  • The Puppy Drum Calcutta entry is $100 per boat and pays 50/50 cash to the boat with the single heaviest legal puppy drum weighed.
  • The Flounder Calcutta entry is $100 per boat and pays 50/50 cash to the boat with the single heaviest legal flounder weighed.
  • The Youth Angler Croaker Calcutta entry is $50 per person and pays 50/50 cash to the single heaviest croaker caught by any angler younger than  14.
  • The Lady Angler Croaker Calcutta entry is $50 per person and pays 50/50 cash to the single heaviest Croaker caught by a lady angler. A youth lady angler could win both the Lady Calcutta and Youth Calcutta if entered into both.

This is a rain-or-shine event. All fish must be caught using hook and line. While boats may fish as far upriver or throughout the bay as they wish, the tournament’s downriver boundary is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.
