Deltaville Maritime Museum presents its Turner Lecture Series pre-season events in January, February and March. The season’s opening lecture, “From Bay Boats to Tug Boats,” by Captain John Melvin Ward Jr., is set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, in the DMM events pavilion.

The Ward family has been instrumental as part of Middlesex County and Deltaville’s  Chesapeake Bay history.

When John Ward looks out his window at work, he does not see tall buildings. He does not see overpasses and crowds. John’s window is on the bridge of one of his boats and his entire career has been involved, one way or the other, with moving boats around on water, big and small.

• 2 p.m. Feb. 4 — Leonard Powell, “Big Captain, Little Captain: The Satisfying Life of a Waterman through the Eyes of His Son.”

• 2 p.m. March 17 — Betsy Washington, “The Wonder of Native Plants.”[/su_note]

In memory of DMM founding member Andy Turner, his wife Evelyn and the Turner family established the Turner Education Fund for DMM to pursue educational activities of all types and ages to continue DMM’s and Holly Point Nature Park’s role as not only an archive, but a “living” museum and learning center.

DMM established an annual lecture series to bring speakers to DMM on subjects of interest to both its membership and community. The series has presented at least three lectures a year since 2019.

Guided by board member Richard Rodgers, three lectures are assembled annually on the third Sunday in January, February and March. Except in unusual circumstances, the lectures will be at 2 p.m. sharp with a lecture, question and answer time, and refreshments.

The lectures will usually be in DMM events pavilion’s north wing, unless one of its other buildings or outside (weather permitting) would be more appropriate to the subject matter.

DMM’s events pavilion’s enclosed section is on the DMM campus at 287 Jackson Creek Road in Deltaville.

There is no admission charge to the lectures, but $10 donations to the Turner Education Fund are welcome. Donations ensure the continuity of the series.

Organizers encourage DMM members and friends to come out and attend these lectures. Call the DMM office at 776-7200 to RSVP. For suggestions and support for the lecture series, email wdwrks@va.metrocast.net, sloopless@gmail.com or office@deltavillemuseum.com.
