Al Ross will present Fanning the Flames: Wildland Fire and Climate Change at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 11, at Lancaster Community Library in Kilmarnock.
LANCASTER—The 30th season of Sundays at Two, a lecture series sponsored by the Lancaster Community Library, will offer a range of topics from medicine, to oystering and wildlife rescue. All sessions are free, open to the public and held in the upstairs meeting room at LCL, 16 Town Centre Drive, Kilmarnock.

Al Ross will open the series at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 11, with Fanning the Flames: Wildland Fire and Climate Change, reported library director Alice Cooper. A veteran of aerial firefighting and industry, Ross will explain how aerial fire fighters change fire behavior. He will relate the changing public perceptions and government policies in an era of climate change.
On February 1, Dr. James Melisi will present Life Is Short: Eat Dessert: Reflections on a Career as a Neurosurgeon. A 30-year career in neurosurgery has provided Dr. Melisi with valuable insights and interesting patients. In addition to sharing his neurological expertise, he will impart some of the wisdom that he has gained on how “we can all better appreciate our own lives,” said Cooper.
On February 15, Kasey Balderson will present From Spawn to Seed: Inside an Oyster Hatchery. Balderson uses her education in organismal biology and leadership to manage Oyster Seed Holdings Inc. of Gwynn’s Island, a commercial producer of oysters, which also offers tours, tastings and a food truck, said Cooper.
On February 22, founder Kimberly Manthy will present Wildlife 911. Since its inception in 2023, Wildlife 911 Northern Neck has helped to rescue more than 1,200 injured and orphaned animals. With her 30 years of experience in this field across the globe, Manthy’s presentation will include how she got started, her favorite stories and the vision for Wildlife 911 Northern Neck, said Cooper.
On March 1, attorney Edward Correia will present Constitutional Issues in Today’s America. A Washington, D.C., attorney, American University professor and author, Correia will explore the Supreme Court’s approach to the Constitution on upcoming issues such as presidential power, privacy, government and religion, said Cooper.
On March 8, Dr. Allener Baker-Rogers will present Where Were Your Ancestors in 1776? A Black Woman’s Perspective. Dr. Baker-Rogers will relate the challenging search to find her ancestors. This resulted in a rich tapestry of her ancestors’ lives, accomplishments and often painful journeys, said Cooper.
Sundays at Two is a year-long effort by the LCL Sundays at Two Committee, said Cooper. Members select speakers from Lancaster, Virginia and beyond. A diversity of topics is fostered in both content and speakers to present issues of interest to all members of the community. Committee members include chairman Lucia Schoelwer, Ernie Monschein, Pat Tracey, Sheila Stepko, Sandy Toomey, Bud Ward and Cooper. All members live or work in Lancaster County and bring a diversity of backgrounds and expertise.
“We invite the public to join us for what promises to be another lively series of topics, said Cooper.
