Scores of bicyclists to stop in Urbanna to honor fallen deputy

MIDDLESEX––The annual Police Unity Tour will be traveling through Urbanna on Saturday, May 10, between 3 and 4 p.m. and will stop on the Beryl Newman Memorial Bridge over Urbanna Creek to honor the late Middlesex County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Hicks.

More than 200 bicyclists (and some motorcyclists) will take part in the 250-mile ride that starts in Portsmouth and ends in Washington, D.C. The tour is designed to raise awareness about police officers who have died in the line of duty and to raise money for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Lt. Hicks was chief deputy of Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office in 1984 when in the early hours on a Sunday morning in May his police car veered off the Newman Bridge while he was responding to a “motorist in distress” call in Urbanna.

After the stop on the bridge, the group will go to the Urbanna firehouse for a rest where the Middlesex County Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will serve the group refreshments before the next leg to the nation’s capital.
