Get ready, get fit and glide into a fitness activity that is the first of its kind on the Middle Peninsula.

Riverside Wellness and Fitness Center – Middle Peninsula will offer a new Glide Fit program at its Gloucester location.

Picture improving your fitness above the water on what looks like a paddleboard, or a floating yoga mat, and that’s Glide Fit. Only instead of paddling, a series of exercise improves core, balance and endurance.

“No one else on the Middle Peninsula has anything like it,” said Rance Bryant, director of Riverside’s Wellness and Fitness Centers. “It’s just a floating exercise mat on the water. And the big thing is anybody can do it.”

The only requirement is being able to pull yourself up to a standing position on the board. Instructors are happy to assist anyone who needs an extra hand. The hour-long classes incorporate yoga, high-intensity interval training,  resistance band training and cool-down exercises. The program improves the core, which leads to improved balance and stability.

“We have land classes for this, but Glide Fit is something different,” Bryant said. “It’s really fun. It’s a new wave that’s going across the United States, and I’m glad we can offer it to residents on the Middle Peninsula.”

The Riverside Wellness and Fitness Center – Middle Peninsula provides all the equipment, including the rectangular board designed to give the body a comprehensive workout. Participants are asked to bring their own towel and water bottle.

Classes are at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cost is $60 for members and $80 for nonmembers.

Glide Fit classes automatically space participants more than six feet apart in the pool, and class size is limited to nine. Masks are not required during class but must be worn to enter any of Riverside’s facilities. Temperature checks and pre-screening questions are also in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 35,000-square-foot Middle Peninsula facility is located on the campus of Riverside Walter Reed Hospital at 7516 Hospital Drive in Gloucester, featuring cardiovascular and strength training equipment, free weights, group exercise classes, an indoor pool and more.

Participants are asked to register in person. For information, call 693-8888.
