Reservations accepted for skipjack cruises

The Claud W. Somers

NORTHUMBERLAND—The classic skipjack Claud W. Somers passed its recent U.S. Coast Guard certification inspection with flying colors. Cruises are being booked for the rest of the season.

The sailing vessel, owned and maintained by the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum (RFM) for the past 25 years, is available for scheduled tours on August 16 and 30, September 13 (the day of the Classic Boat Show), October 18 and 25. Some cruises have limited availability.

Cruises leave from the museum dock around 10 a.m. for a two-hour sail.

The fee is $30 for members and $35 others. Payment is due at time of booking. The boat can carry up to 20 passengers. Minimum age is 10.

The boat also can be chartered for groups.

“Keeping a 1911 skipjack alive and U.S.C.G. certified for passengers is a noble cause,” according to David Croy, a Somers volunteer. “We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Cockrell’s Marine Railway for their significant support and guidance through this endeavor. The unwavering dedication and community spirit displayed by our volunteers have been instrumental in achieving this milestone, which aligns perfectly with the RFM mission to preserve maritime history.”

For reservations contact the museum, 453-6529, office@rfmuseum.org, or www.rfmuseum.org.
