Rehearsals are underway for ‘The Marvelous Wonderettes’

LANCASTER––The Lancaster Players will present “The Marvelous Wonderettes” at 8 p.m. June 7-8, 13-15 and 20-22, and 3 p.m. June 9, 16 and 23 at The Lancaster Playhouse, 361 Chesapeake Drive, White Stone.

Music director Starlet Knight sets the pace for The Marvelous Wonderettes at The Lancaster Players, opening June 7.

Robin Blake, director of The Marvelous Wonderettes, will bring another colorful, distinctive musical to the stage. The upcoming show features a variety of much-loved tunes and is an engaging trip down memory lane with 25 pop hits of the 50s and 60s. The setting is a 1950s gym decked out for the Super Senior Prom. When the school’s glee club gets cancelled for the event, the four school song leaders who have formed a “girl group” are tapped for the entertainment.

The singing Marvelous Wonderettes, played by Laurie Breakwell, Catherine Curtis, Katie Lynn Lucy and Jenifer Walker, are familiar to anyone who attended high school. They are the prom queen hopefuls, feuding BFFs, girls next door and secret crush holders. Their stories of relationships and rivalries, dreams and dramas are told through a collage of memorable music.

“Each show has its particular set of technical challenges and ‘The Marvelous Wonderettes’ is no exception,” said. president Luke Rawls. He and music director Starlet Knight are working out a way to move the sound of a motorcycle from the sound booth directly to one of the piano keys.

“Leader of the Pack,” with its distinctive “first notes” is one of the show’s songs, along with other hits such as “Stupid Cupid,” “Wedding Bell Blues” and “Son of a Preacher Man.”

The theater will open an hour prior to curtain with cash bar. Tickets are $30 and available at www.lancasterplayers.org or 435-3776. Groups of 15 receive a 10% discount when tickets are purchased together.
