The Mathews Historical Museum invites you to “fall in love with history” in February, in recognition of Black History Month. After a January closure for renovations, Mathews Museum Movie Night returns Friday, Feb. 16 with a screening of “The Loving Story,” a 2011 HBO documentary that tells the heart-rending story of Richard and Mildred Loving. The documentary details how their interracial marriage changed the fabric of Virginia, and the nation, during the civil rights era.
Doors will open at 5 p.m. The event opens with a reception, then there will be a brief business meeting at 5:30 p.m. and acknowledgement of retired Museum Director John Caramia’s 10 years of service. The film will begin at 6 p.m.
The HBO documentary is about a famous case that went before the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1960s. “The Loving Story” is very compelling. Directed by Nancy Buirski, written by Nancy Buirski and Susie Ruth Powell, the movie stars Jane Alexander, Lindsay Almon, Jr., and Edward L. Ayers. The movie will be presented in the newly renovated movie room of the Mathews Historical Museum at 200 Main St. in Mathews.
