On Sunday, Nov. 14, from 1-5 p.m. the Middlesex County Museum and Historical Society is partnering with The Friends of Urbanna, who support the Urbanna Scottish Factor Store Museum, to host a barbecue to help fund the preservation, collection, education and sharing of our local history at the newly preserved barn at historic Rosegill.
The Middlesex County Museum was funded by the Public Works Administration (WPA) that was a part of the federal program called “The New Deal” in 1935, and is the oldest county museum in Virginia. The Urbanna Museum was established as a colonial business, known as the James Mills Factor Store and served a succession of Scottish merchants and was preserved by the Ralph Wormeley Branch of the WPVA established in 1938.
Rosegill was established between 1650-1654, consisted of 3,200 patented acres and served as the home of the very influential Wormeleys for five generations. The present home, built between 1730-1750 with additions and modifications throughout the 1700s, is beautifully preserved along the banks of the Rappahannock River and Urbanna Creek (Nimcock Creek.) The barn pictured here is now freshly painted, cleaned, repaired and majestic with its great timbers, immense ceiling height and side boards. During the event, the Middlesex County Museum and Historical Society’s annual preservation award will be presented to Dr. Paul Malone for his many years of research and education of the public about the John Mitchell Map used by the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Tickets are $75 each, which includes a barbecue meal, beer and wine and live folk music. Sponsorships are available at the following levels: Under $100 Supporter, $100 Silver, $250 Gold and $500 Platinum.
