‘Marvelous Wonderettes’ will return to Lancaster Playhouse this summer

From left, Jenifer Walker, Maegan Carbino, Amber Wood and Laurie Breakwell bring graduation day to life with four-part harmony 1950s and 60s classics as they celebrate their graduation in “The Marvelous Wonderettes: Caps and Gowns.”

LANCASTER—Two summers ago, The Lancaster Playhouse, 361 Chesapeake Drive, White Stone, was alive with nostalgia as The Marvelous Wonderettes filled the theater with the pop sounds of the 1950s and 1960s.

From left, musical director Mary Beran and director Robin Blake guide the song-leader quartet back to the stage, shaping the music and memories of “The Marvelous Wonderettes: Caps and Gowns.”

Under the direction of Robin Blake, the story of four highs school song leaders—and their goodnatured rivalry for prom queen—left audiences cheering for more.

Coming this summer, the Wonderettes will return to share the next chapter. In “The Marvelous Wonderettes: Caps and Gowns,” Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy and Suzy sing their way through senior year, celebrating friends and teachers, facing the future and delivering plenty of sparkle.

Evening performances, 7 p.m. social hour, 8 p.m. curtain, will be held June 18–20, June 25–27 and July 9–11. Sunday matinees, 2 p.m. social hour, 3 p.m. curtain, will be held June 21 and 28 and July 12.

Tickets are $30. Purchase tickets at lancasterplayers.org, or 435-3776.

“We are thrilled to bring the long-awaited sequel to our stage,” said Blake. “Laurie Breakwell and Jenifer Walker reprise their roles as Betty Jean and Missy and are joined by newcomers Maegan Carbina and Amber Wood as Suzy and Cindy Lou.”

Playwright Roger Bean’s exuberant trip down memory lane promises to have audiences “Dancing in the Street!,” she said.

Music director Mary Beran studied piano performance at James Madison University and has been teaching from her private studio since 1988. In addition to this new collaboration with The Lancaster Players, she has also maintained an active performance career, appearing with orchestras, choirs and musical theater productions, and accompanying opera singers in concert and recital settings.
