The Lancaster Virginia Historical Society will host a special “Afternoon at Verville” at 3 p.m. June 7 at the home of Ammon G. Dunton, Jr. near Merry Point.
The event will feature a traditional, seated afternoon tea service inside the historic house with an array of savory and sweet treats, plus a welcome reception with champagne by the garden and personal tours by Dunton.
Tickets are $70 for Lancaster Virginia Historical Society (LVHS) members and $100 for others. Tickets must be purchased in advance. To secure a reservation, call 462-7280.
Proceeds support the work of the LVHS museum and library to keep local history and genealogy meaningful and available to everyone.
“As a private home, Verville is rarely open to the public, so this event offers a truly exceptional opportunity to visit one of Lancaster County’s few surviving colonial structures and to enjoy the gentlemanly hospitality and historical knowledge of its well-known current owner,” said executive director Karen Hart.
The oldest section of the house was built c. 1725 by Henry Carter, the son of Thomas and Katherine Dale Carter, and later purchased by James Gordon in the 1740s and Judge Ellyson Currie in 1803, who added two wings and gave the property its French name.
In the 1970s, Ammon and Kathy Dunton undertook historic restoration work and completed a final addition to the house. The original interior woodwork remains and is complemented by period furnishings and artwork plus scenic views of terraced gardens, surrounding fields and a sheep meadow.
