Kilmarnock to host back to the ‘80s event

LANCASTER—Dust off the leg warmers, tease up the hair and get ready for a totally tubular Labor Day Weekend!

The Town of Kilmarnock, in partnership with 101.7 Bay FM, will bring the sights, sounds and nostalgia of the 1980s to Steptoes with Back to the ‘80s Labor Day Weekend, featuring music, a free outdoor movie, an authentic DeLorean, an ‘80s Selfie Tour, a costume contest and an official after-party, said economic development and tourism coordinator Sharon Phillips.

The celebration will begin at sunset September 3 with a free viewing of Back to the Future at Town Centre Park, 150 North Main Street, Kilmarnock.

On September 4, the celebration will offer an authentic DeLorean on display from 2-5 p.m. at Nacho Average Brewpub, 44 West Church Street, Kilmarnock. Visitors are urged to explore downtown, complete the Back to the ‘80s Selfie Tour, shop and dine before heading to Town Centre Park for a Music on the Half Shell concert featuring The Deloreans.

At 6:45 p.m., the Back to the ‘80s Costume Contest will take the Half Shell Stage, where participants dressed in their best ‘80s attire will compete for a $500 cash prize. The concert will follow at 7 p.m. Following the concert, the celebration will continue with an after-party at Nacho Average Brewpub.

Throughout the week, visitors can participate in the Back to the ‘80s Selfie Tour, featuring 18 life-size cardboard cutouts of iconic ‘80s legends displayed inside participating downtown businesses. Participants are urged to visit each location, snap a selfie, tag #VisitKilmarnock, the business and enter for a chance to win their favorite cardboard cutout. “Events like Back to the ‘80s Weekend do more than entertain—they invite people to experience Kilmarnock,” said Phillips. “Whether you call Kilmarnock home, are welcoming Labor Day guests, or are discovering Virginia’s River Realm for the first time, we invite you to spend Labor Day Weekend with us.”
