Anticipation builds among rival teams for YMCA Camp Kekoka Polar Bear Plunge

A Northern Neck Rotary Club team recently showed up at the Chesapeake Bank Training Center in Kilmarnock to let the Chesapeake Bank team, “Up to Snow Good,” know they mean business.

Both teams are raising money to participate in YMCA Camp Kekoka’s Polar Bear Plunge April 10 and win the coveted Golden Plunger.

The YMCA Camp Kekoka Polar Bear Plunge will be held April 10 at YMCA/APYC Camp Kekoka, 1083 Boys Camp Road, Kilmarnock.

“The 11th annual Camp Kekoka Polar Bear Plunge will be held this year, come cold or warm water,” said YMCA Camp Kekoka vice chairman Donna McGrath.

“We had to reschedule from our usual January date to April 10 due to pandemic restrictions,” said McGrath. “Kids need camp more than ever this year, and we are so excited that the governor has stated children will be able to go to overnight camp this summer.”

“Freezin’ for a Reason,” the camp’s largest fundraiser, ensures all children have the opportunity to enjoy a week of camp where they can get outside and grow inside, regardless of financial ability, said board chairman Denise Munns.

Community participation is encouraged—plunging into Indian Creek from Camp Kekoka’s beach, either as an individual or as part of a team, supporting a plunger or team, or making a donation, said Munns.

Plunger and spectator check-in will be held from 10-10:45 a.m. Plungers report to the waterfront at 10:45 a.m. Plunging in waves to maintain social distancing will begin at 11 a.m. A celebration will follow from 11:30 a.m.-noon
