5 Things to do in West Point

Tucked where the Mattaponi and Pamunkey rivers meet, West Point is a hidden gem full of small-town charm and big-time experiences. From lively Friday night concerts and a creekside farmers market to a walkable downtown with shops and restaurants — not to mention coastal traditions like the Crab Carnival, one of Virginia’s most popular fall festivals — there’s far more to see and do here than most visitors realize. Whether you’re planning a day trip or weekend getaway, these five can’t-miss activities are the perfect way to discover all that West Point has to offer.

1. Food Trucks by the River and Jammin’ On the Point

From spring through fall, West Point’s weekends kick off in style with Food Trucks by the River, a lively Friday night series at the Pavilion at Riverwalk Park. With rotating food trucks, wine from Gauthier Vineyard, live music, and sunset views over the water, it’s the perfect way to wind down the week.

On the first Friday of each month from May to September, the energy shifts a few blocks over to Jammin’ On the Point, where Town Park comes alive with free concerts, food vendors, and a festive, family-friendly crowd. Bring a chair, grab a bite, and enjoy a laid-back night of music and community under the stars. Together, these events offer a true taste of West Point’s small-town charm and riverside rhythm.

2. West Point Crab Carnival

With more than 40 years of tradition, the West Point Crab Carnival is a hometown favorite held downtown each year on the first Friday and Saturday in October. What started in 1982 as a small community gathering has grown into one of Virginia’s most popular fall festivals — complete with crab feasts, craft and food vendors, live music on multiple stages, a lively parade, fireworks over the Pamunkey River, and family fun like the ever-popular Tour de Crab bike race. From the first crack of a crab claw to the final fireworks lighting up the river, the Crab Carnival captures the heart of West Point’s small-town spirit. It’s a celebration of coastal culture that brings generations together year after year. Whether you visit for the food, the music, or the fun, this weekend tradition serves up a perfect slice of Tidewater charm.

3. Historic Downtown

Strolling through historic downtown West Point is like stepping into a charming riverside postcard. With tree-lined streets, waterfront views, and a walkable, pet-friendly vibe, it’s easy to spend an afternoon exploring the town’s local gems. You’ll find everything from historic homes and churches to the Historical Society of West Point Museum, plus one-of-a-kind shops and eateries like The Pie Lady and Company, The Exchange on Main, The Blue Crab of WP, The Daily Fix, and Divin’ Off the Dock. Grab a coffee, browse antiques and books, or unwind at Beach Park with views of where the Mattaponi and Pamunkey rivers meet. It’s a family-friendly spot, too — complete with a playground, green space, and plenty to see and do for all ages.

4. Fishing, Kayaking, and Boating at Glass Island and West Point Creek

Exploring West Point by water is one of the best ways to take in the town’s natural beauty, whether you’re casting a line, paddling through quiet creeks, or cruising the open river. Launch from Glass Island for a relaxing day of fishing—it’s a local favorite with a pier, picnic area, and great views of the Mattaponi. For a more hands-on adventure, head to the West Point Creek Kayak Ramp downtown, where a self-serve rental station makes it easy to rent a kayak and explore the calm, scenic waters teeming with herons, crabs, and osprey. You can also launch from Beach Park or 5th Street Beach to paddle where the Mattaponi and Pamunkey meet to form the York River. Whether you’re out for the catch of the day or a peaceful float, West Point’s waterways offer a perfect mix of adventure and coastal charm.

5. West Point Farmers Market

Every Saturday morning from mid-May through mid-September, the West Point Farmers Market brings the Pavilion at Riverwalk Park to life with fresh produce, baked goods, flowers, plants, jams and jellies, sweet treats, and more. Running from 8 a.m. to noon, it’s become a favorite weekend tradition — and was even recently recognized as one of coastal Virginia’s markets that’s “doing it right.” You’ll find friendly faces, small-town charm, and a great mix of local vendors offering everything from honey and eggs to gourmet dog treats. Set along the river, it’s the kind of place where neighbors catch up, kids run around, and visitors feel right at home.
