RILL announces fall schedule

RICHMOND COUNTY—The Rappahannock Community College (RCC) Rappahannock Institute for Lifelong Learning (RILL) recently released its fall schedule.

RILL invites adults to “go back to school” with a variety of classes, from history to pickleball, said media services manager Michele Inderrieden. The modest tuition fee for classes helps support a scholarship for a student at RCC.

September classes include:

Think Like an Economist, 10 a.m.-noon, September 9, 16 and 23, RCC Warsaw Campus. Students will explore basic economic concepts like disparate impact versus disparate treatment, the 80/20 rule, Pareto Efficiency and bartering. The instructor will be Colin McClung. The fee is $35.

Beginner Pickleball, 9-10:30 a.m., September 11, 13, 18 and 20, RCC Warsaw Campus. For the first-time adult player, this course will cover the basics of pickleball rules, terminology and primary skills. Paddles and balls will be provided. The instructor will be Paul Shrieves. The fee is $35.

One Room Schools in Northumberland County, 2-4 p.m. September 12, 19 and 26, Shiloh School, Holley Graded School and the Julius Rosenwald School. Northumberland is home to several historic one-room schoolhouses that educated children before the public school system was established. Instructors will include Camille Grabb, Garfield Parker and Marian Veney Ashton. The fee is $35.

Beginner Pickleball, 1-2:30 p.m., September 18, 20, 25 and 27, Newington Baptist Church, Gloucester. The instructor will be Carlos Morales. The fee is $35.

Rosewell: An Overview and History of Colonial America’s Most Magnificent Mansion, 1-3 p.m., September 24, Rosewell Foundation, Gloucester. Students will learn how the site is being sustainably preserved, plans to expand interpretation and access to the site and its collections. Instructors will be Dr. David Brown and Thane Harpole, co-directors of the Fairfields Foundation. The fee is $20.

Intermediate Pickleball, 9-10:30 a.m., September 25 and 27, October 2 and 4, RCC Warsaw Campus. For the player who has completed beginner Pickleball, emphasis will be on score keeping, improving different strokes, fundamentals and court positioning. The instructor will be Will Cox. The fee is $35.

The African-American Experience; Antebellum, Civil War and Reconstruction, 2-4 p.m., September 30, October 7 and 14. Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury, Irvington. Students will examine the history of abolitionism, secession, the “contraband” status of Blacks, emancipation, U.S. Colored Troops, the 14th amendment and the Freedmen’s Bureau. The instructor will be Keith Kehlbeck. The fee is $35.
