Register starting Sept. 1 for Dragon Run trips

GLOUCESTER––Registration for fall Dragon Run paddle trips opens Sept. 1 at 9 a.m. The paddle trips are conducted by Friends of Dragon Run (FODR) in the spring, summer, and fall, weather permitting. Sign up at DragonRun.org.

Dragon Run paddle participants check out beautiful natural scenery along the waterway, which runs through Gloucester, Middlesex and King & Queen counties.

This year’s fall paddle season on Dragon Run will begin on Oct. 19 and end Nov. 5. Trips will be conducted every day. Each trip will accommodate nine guests. All guests must be at least 18 years of age. The paddle trips will be round trips and the upstream paddling may be strenuous at times. Paddle guests are provided with a kayak, personal flotation device, and paddle. A crew of volunteers assists guests through beaver dams and along the course of the journey. A nature guide accompanies the guests to point out flora and fauna and to answer questions.

“The trees in the Dragon this time of year are exceptional — beautiful colors plus the bald cypress are turning a cinnamon color,” said FODR President Jeff Wright. “Shrubs with bright berries are everywhere, waiting for resident and migrating birds to fill up on them on their journey south. Plus, the temperatures are ideal for paddling in the fall.”

Dragon Run is a unique ecosystem that stretches 40 miles from Powcan to the Piankatank River. Most access points to Dragon Run are on private property which has helped protect this pristine watershed and contributed to the unique habitat and abundance of wildlife.

Friends of Dragon Run is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to preserving, protecting, and ensuring the wise use of the Dragon Run watershed. One way to achieve this goal is to offer the public an opportunity to experience this unique habitat.

Paddle trips are also a primary fundraiser for FODR, and the organization requests a $50 donation at the time of registration. Be sure to sign up soon; reservations fill quickly.
