Oyster gardening class coming up in Mathews

A class is planned in Mathews for people wanting to know the basics of oyster gardening.

Dr. Richard Siciliano, a master oyster gardener representing Tidewater Oyster Gardeners Association (TOGA), will teach the free 90-minute class at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, in the Mathews Land Conservancy Community Building, 1039 Williams Wharf Road, Mathews. The local session is one of a series that TOGA is offering to let people know the basics of growing oysters.

The class (Oysters 101) covers the basics of growing oysters, assessing water suitability, acquiring seed oysters and supplies, applying for a non-commercial Virginia oyster garden permit, choosing oyster floats and cages, and harvesting oysters.
