Curator to discuss Lee family artifact

This 1790 silk waistcoat owned by Thomas Lee Shippen will be the topic of an upcoming presentation to Preservation Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.

Preservation Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula (PNNMP) will host an illustrated talk on the restoration of an 18th century Lee family waistcoat at 2 p.m. February 11 at Wellford Hall, St. John’s Episcopal Church, 5987 Richmond Road, Warsaw.

Stratford Hall curator of exhibits and design Amy Connolly will speak on the conservation of a circa 1790 silk waistcoat owned by Thomas Lee Shippen (1765-1798).

The project to conserve the light green silk waistcoat trimmed in blue and yellow, with working pockets and a deep stand-up collar, received support from the PNNMP Competitive Grants Program in 2021, reported Marsha Sitnik.

“With that support and a gift from a PNNMP board member, the entire restoration of this beautiful and historically significant garment was completed for those of us in the Northern Neck and beyond to enjoy,” said Sitnik.

Shippen was a grandson of Thomas Lee (1690-1750), the original owner of Stratford Hall. Connolly will bring the waistcoat for participants to view. It is typically only on display at Stratford Hall, occasionally in the Great House and in Visitor Center exhibits.
