Nestled on the Potomac River in the northern most portion of the Northern Neck lies one of Virginia’s hidden gems. With an array of boutique inns, short-term rentals, campgrounds and budget-friendly motels, Colonial Beach is the perfect spot to enjoy a spontaneous weekend adventure or a fun-filled day trip. From beach bums to thrill seekers, foodies and craft beer and wine enthusiasts, Colonial Beach has something for everyone.
1. Soak in some rays
Colonial Beach is home to Virginia’s second largest sand beach. The Downtown Boardwalk Beach, parallel to Taylor Street, is a popular destination lined with shops, restaurants, watersports opportunities, swings and a bathhouse. Just north of the boardwalk guests looking for a bit more seclusion can make camp at North Beach. Families should consider enjoying a beach day at Castlewood Beach at the southern end of Irving Avenue. The public boat launch on Monroe Bay is nearby and a dog park, picnic tables, restrooms, jungle gym and playground are all in proximity to the sandy beach. Irving Avenue Beach is a little more secluded area and is home to the Cannon War Memorial.
2. Explore by golf cart
The vibrant downtown and shopping scene is accessible by golf cart, bikes, cars, or foot. With a couple of golf-cart outfitters offering rentals by the hour, day, or weekend, zipping around on a golf cart in the open seaside, salty air is fun and practical. Check out the Everything’s Beachy “beach shop” for a quintessential souvenir shop, then cart on over to Magnolia Hall for beach-inspired clothing and jewelry. Don’t forget about the pets! Beach Paws Boutique has all the needed fashionable wares and accessories your pooch will love.
3. Experience the fast track
Looking for an adventure beyond the sand? Try Custom T’s Motorsports Park, 2035 James Monroe Highway. The 50-acre racing facility which features an 1/8 mile drag strip offers thrilling sights for the adrenaline junkies. Race enthusiasts have an opportunity to rent lanes for up to five hours on the track.
If horse racing gets your motor running, head to Riverboat on the Potomac and take a chance on the ponies or play the Virginia or Maryland lotteries.
4. Step back in time
James Monroe was the fifth president of the U.S. and is remembered for the Monroe Doctrine, which limited European Colonialism in the Americas. Today, his memory lives on at his Birthplace Park and Museum, 4460 James Monroe Highway. Originally a peach and apple orchard, the 74-acre property boasts beautifully kept trails and a pier overlooking the quaint Monroe Creek. History buffs will love the Commemorative Timeline Walking Trail in the heart of the park. The Birthplace Home opened to the public in 2021. Hundreds of archeological findings from the original site can be seen throughout the museum.
5. Cool off and wind down
From beachside tiki bars and locally brewed beer, to authentic Thai cuisine and Mexican cantinas, any palette can be pleased at Colonial Beach. For a fun atmosphere with music, check out Dockside Tiki Bar, or High Tides on the Potomac and Black Pearl Tiki Bar. Those looking for a more formal and upscale dining experience may want to stop by Sunflower Cuisine, featuring Thai and French cuisine. Seafood spots include Drift Seafood + Bar and Wilkerson’s Seafood Restaurant. Beer lovers can get home-brewed pints at Colonial Beach Brewing or Ice House Brewery and Kitchen. Craving a dip for dessert, you can’t go wrong with The Pink Poodle Ice Cream Shoppe or the Ice Cream Hut.
