Experience the American Revolution to understand events that led to America’s war for independence. The museum is located near the battlefield where allied American and French forces won the battle of the American Revolution in 1781.

The story of America’s evolution from colonial status to a nation is told through indoor galleries featuring period artifacts, immersive environments, interactive exhibits and films, including “The Siege of Yorktown,” with a 180-degree surround screen and special effects.

Outside, witness artillery demonstrations, a re-created Continental Army encampment and Revolution-era farm.

$12 for adults, $7 for ages 6-12; free for ages 5 and under. Open year-round 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (9 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 15–Aug. 15), except Christmas and New Year’s days.

Watermen’s Museum

This museum is a private non-profit museum located on the York River. The museum was founded in 1981 as a part of the 200th anniversary celebration of the Battle of Yorktown. In the Revolutionary war, local watermen aided the French fleet, acting as captains for the ships traveling the waterways.

The Watermen’s Museum’s mission is to demonstrate the role of Chesapeake Bay Watermen and how they played a role in shaping the nation. You can experience a historical display of exhibits, crafts and methods of trade, as well as an interesting look into the Watermen’s lives.

The museum offers educational programs for everyone. Activities and exhibits illustrate and explain the importance of the efforts and the accomplishments by those who work the waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

Open Tues.–Sat.: 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sun. 1–5 p.m. Closed Mon. except some holidays. Members and active duty military - free, adults $5, seniors and students $4, under 12 - free.

Visit the Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Center, which includes an orientation film, exhibits, and bookstore. Explore the fields, earthworks, and historic buildings where American independence was won. Ranger-led tours of the battlefield and historic town leave from the visitor center daily. Admission fee required.
