Los Portales offers a Mexican feast

(Excellent food) is what you will find when visiting Los Portales in Callao.
One late afternoon my husband, Taylor, and I made the trek from Deltaville to Northumberland County for some Mexican food. We love Mexican food and have it at least once a week.
On the drive, I pulled up Los Portales’ menu on my phone, looking for something other than my usual fare. I found it: a seafood burrito.
Los Portales is on Northumberland Highway, just as you enter Callao from Lottsburg. Owner, Miguel Araya opened this Mexican cantina in August 2015.
It’s a small restaurant with a colorful, festively decorated bar area and a “sunroom” for outdoor seating. We chose a booth by a window. In addition to the complimentary salsa, I ordered cheese dip and a 12-ounce peach margarita.
Los Portales’ salsa offered just the right amount of kick, made with a blend of tomatoes, cilantro, onion and spices.
The seafood burrito was described as a 10-inch flour tortilla stuffed with shrimp, scallops and crab meat sautéed with peppers and onions, and rice—all covered in mouthwatering cheese dip. It didn’t dissapoint.
More than I could eat, it was a plate-sized burrito, with seafood and rice spilling out of each end.
Taylor chose the California fajita, described as tender slices of beef, chicken, shrimp and chorizo, melted cheese, sautéed peppers, potatoes, onions and tomatoes, served with rice, beans and guacamole salad. They also offer the choice of a corn or flour tortilla.
Taylor’s dish was served sizzling and was piled high.
Once Taylor took his first bite, he exclaimed “Wow!” He said it tasted very authentic and was probably the best fajita he has had in a long time.
And one thing is for sure, no one should leave hungry. In fact, we asked for two boxes and took half of each dish home.
We also didn’t want to overeat because what Mexican dinner would be complete with an order of fried ice cream for dessert. The menu described it as a scoop of vanilla ice cream covered with special granola coating, deep fried and topped with chocolate and whipped cream. Served in a hard tortilla bowl, it was the perfect treat to end an delicious meal.
The food at Los Portales is ¡muy bien! And the prices aren’t bad either. The two of us had dinner, drinks and dessert for about $40.
